Business Parcel or Speed Post? A straight answer by weight
Up to a kilogram the two are priced within a few rupees of each other. After that the gap opens fast. Here is where the crossover actually is, and how to decide without a spreadsheet.
Both services run on the same India Post network, both are tracked end to end, and both carry parcels up to 35 kg. The only two things that separate them are how fast a parcel moves and what it costs — and the second one changes much more dramatically with weight than most people expect.
Under 1 kg, it barely matters
At the 500 g step the two services are within a handful of rupees on every lane. At 1 kg they are identical on a local lane and separated by single-digit rupees within a state. If your parcel is light, book Speed Post: you get a materially faster service for a rounding error.
This is the single most useful thing to know about the tariff, and it is invisible unless you look at both columns side by side.
Between 1 kg and 2 kg, the gap opens
The 1.5 kg step is where the two cards stop tracking each other. On the longer lanes Speed Post roughly doubles while Business Parcel climbs gently, and from there the two never converge again.
If you ship in this band regularly, it is worth knowing exactly where your typical parcel lands, because 1.4 kg and 1.6 kg are charged at different steps and the difference compounds across a month.
Above 5 kg, Business Parcel wins on cost, decisively
By 10 kg to another state, Speed Post costs close to twice as much. By 35 kg it is more than double. The extra buys you a few days.
That trade is worth making for a time-critical shipment and almost never worth making for a routine one. The most common expensive mistake we see is a seller defaulting every order to Speed Post because it is the name they recognise.
A rule of thumb
If you want one sentence to work from:
- Under 1 kg — Speed Post. It is faster and costs almost the same.
- 1 kg to 5 kg — decide per order. If the customer is waiting on a date, Speed Post; otherwise Business Parcel.
- Over 5 kg — Business Parcel, unless something specific justifies paying roughly double.
Check it yourself
The whole tariff is published on the rates page, including a compare view that shows both services on one lane with the difference calculated for you. It takes about twenty seconds to check your own typical parcel rather than working from a rule of thumb.
