Answers on accounts, rates, tracking, delivery and billing for booking India Post parcels through Daakly.
Questions
- Is Daakly cheaper than booking at the post office counter?
- Daakly books at the contractual parcel tariff, which sits below the over-the-counter tariff for the same services. The whole card is published on our rates page, so you can compare any figure against what India Post charges at a counter yourself rather than taking our word for it.
- Do I still have to go to the post office?
- Yes. You book and pay online, print the label, and hand the parcel in at any post office. What changes is the price you pay and the fact that the paperwork is already done when you arrive — not who carries the parcel.
- Which services can I book?
- Two: Business Parcel, which is the India Post parcel product at contractual rates, and Speed Post, which is India Post’s express service at contractual rates. Both are tracked end to end, both run on the same nationwide network, and both carry parcels up to 35 kg.
- What is the difference between Business Parcel and Speed Post?
- Speed and price. Speed Post typically moves in one to five days and Business Parcel in three to eight. Up to about a kilogram the two are priced within a few rupees of each other. Above that the gap widens sharply — at 10 kg to another state, Speed Post costs roughly twice as much. If the delivery date matters, pay for Speed Post; if it does not, do not.
- Are the rates on this site the final price?
- Yes, and more than that: a figure on this site is the whole charge. It carries India Post’s postage, Daakly’s commission and the GST on both. Nothing is added to it at booking.
- Do I need a GST number to use Daakly?
- No. Individuals and unregistered sellers ship on the same account and the same rates as anyone else. If you are a registered business you can add your GSTIN in settings, which puts it on your invoices so you can claim input credit.
- What does a Daakly account cost?
- Nothing. There is no registration fee, no subscription and no minimum volume. You add money to your Daakly wallet and each shipment is deducted from it at the time of booking.
- How is the weight of my parcel decided?
- Shipments are billed on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight, where volumetric weight is length × width × height in centimetres divided by 5,000. A large, light parcel takes the same space in a van as a small heavy one, which is why carriers price it that way. The weight then rounds up to the next step on the tariff card.
- Can I track a shipment without signing in?
- Yes. Any consignment number can be tracked from the public tracking page, and you can share that link with your customer.
- How are India Post parcel rates calculated?
- By weight step and distance zone. The parcel falls into a weight step, and the route falls into one of four zones — Local, Within State, Zone/Metro, or Other States. The step and the zone together give the postage. Part-used weight steps are charged in full, so a 1.2 kg parcel pays the 1.5 kg rate.
- What are the four zones?
- Local is within the same city or delivery district. Within State is between two places in the same postal circle. Zone/Metro covers metro-to-metro lanes and traffic within the same postal zone. Other States is everything else in India. The zone depends on both ends of the journey, not on the distance alone.
- Is GST included in these rates?
- Yes, and so is everything else. The tables on this page are the Daakly rate card: India Post’s postage, our commission and the GST on both, in one figure. The number in the table is what the parcel costs — there is no tax line and no fee line to add afterwards.
- What is volumetric weight and when does it apply?
- Volumetric weight is length × width × height in centimetres divided by 5,000, giving a figure in kilograms. Shipments are billed on whichever is greater, actual or volumetric. It applies whenever a parcel is bulky relative to its weight — a box of cushions or packing material, for example.
- What is the cheapest weight to send a parcel at?
- The tariff starts at a 500 g step, and that step is a floor rather than a slab a lighter parcel escapes: a 120 g parcel is charged the 500 g rate because the parcel card has no row beneath it. If you are sending something very light and it is a document, letter post is a different product and may be cheaper.
- What is the last-mile charge?
- A separate small charge printed on the same rate card. It applies to India Post Parcel on shipments up to 5 kg, and the amount depends on where the parcel enters the network — induction at a delivery office costs less than at a parcel hub or processing centre. It is shown on this page in full, and confirmed at booking, because which one applies is decided when the parcel is handed in.
- How heavy a parcel can I send?
- The rate card runs to 35 kg, and that is the ceiling for a single parcel on both services. Anything heavier has to be split across multiple consignments.
- Do these rates change?
- India Post revises its tariff periodically, and this card follows. The effective date is printed above every rate table on this site, and the exact charge for any shipment is confirmed at the moment you book it.
- Where do I find my consignment number?
- It is printed on the label and on the manifest, it is shown on the shipment in your Daakly dashboard, and it is in the confirmation email sent when the booking is made. It is a 13-character code, usually two letters, nine digits and two letters.
- My tracking has not updated in two days. Is the parcel lost?
- Usually not. Scans happen when a parcel changes hands, not continuously, so a parcel in long-distance transit can go a day or two between events — particularly over a weekend or a public holiday. If there has been no scan for more than four working days, raise it with support and we will chase it.
- Can I share tracking with my customer?
- Yes. The public tracking page needs no account, so the link can be sent to anyone. It shows the scan trail and the current status, and nothing about your account or your other shipments.
- What does "Item returned to sender" mean?
- Delivery was attempted and could not be completed — usually a wrong or incomplete address, nobody available across repeated attempts, or a refused parcel — so the item is on its way back to the pickup address. The scan trail will show which of those it was.
- How quickly do you reply?
- Support is staffed Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 19:00 IST, and email is normally answered the same working day. Formal grievances are acknowledged within 15 days, as required of an intermediary in India, and usually far sooner.
- Something has gone wrong with a delivery. Who do I raise it with?
- Raise it with us first. We book the shipment and hold the booking record, so we can see the full scan trail and open a case with India Post on your behalf. Going directly to the post office without the booking reference usually costs you a day.
- Can I get an invoice with my GSTIN on it?
- Yes. Add your GSTIN in settings and it appears on every invoice issued after that point, so you can claim input credit. Invoices already issued cannot be reissued with a GSTIN added retrospectively.
