India Post tracking — track a Speed Post or Business Parcel consignment
Track any India Post Speed Post or Business Parcel consignment by its 13-character article number. No account needed. Scans happen when a parcel changes hands rather than continuously, so a day or two of silence in transit is normal — this page explains what each status means and when a parcel is genuinely worth chasing.
How to track an India Post consignment
Look up a Speed Post or Business Parcel consignment by its article number, with no account.
- Get the consignment number — Ask the sender, or read it off the parcel’s label. It is 13 characters: two letters, nine digits and two letters, ending in IN.
- Enter it — Type or paste it into the tracking field at https://www.daakly.com/track. Spaces and case do not matter. No account is needed.
- Read the scan trail — Scans are listed newest first, so the top one is where the parcel is now. Each scan is a moment the parcel changed hands, not a continuous position.
India Post parcel tracking statuses
What each status on an India Post consignment means to the person waiting for the parcel.
- Booked
- The sender has booked it. It starts moving once they hand it in at a post office.
- Manifested
- Packed and ready. The sender is about to hand it in at a post office.
- Picked up
- Accepted by India Post and on its way to you.
- In transit
- Moving between sorting facilities towards your delivery post office.
- Out for delivery
- With your postman today. Someone at the address will need to receive it.
- Delivered
- Delivered to your address. Not received it? Check with anyone else there, then tell the sender.
- Delivery failed
- The postman could not deliver it. Another attempt usually follows — if your address or phone number is wrong, tell the sender now.
- Returning to sender
- It could not be delivered and is going back to the sender. Contact them to have it sent again.
- Returned to sender
- It could not be delivered and is back with the sender. Contact them to have it sent again.
- Cancelled
- The sender cancelled this shipment before sending it. Nothing is on its way under this number.
- Lost
- India Post has declared it lost. Contact the sender — they can raise the claim.

Questions
- Where do I find the consignment number?
- The sender has it — it is printed on the parcel’s label and on their booking. Ask them for it, or for the tracking link, which opens this page with the number already filled in. It is 13 characters: two letters, nine digits and two letters.
- My tracking has not updated in two days. Is my parcel lost?
- Usually not. Scans happen when a parcel changes hands, not continuously, so a parcel travelling a long way can go a day or two between them — longer over a weekend or a public holiday. If there has been no scan for six working days, ask the sender to raise it.
- It says delivered, but I have not received it.
- Check first with anyone else at the address — family, neighbours, reception or security — because India Post hands a parcel to whoever is present. If it is still missing, tell the sender the same day: they hold the booking record and can raise it with India Post.
- What does "Returned to sender" mean?
- Delivery could not be completed — usually an incomplete address, nobody available across attempts, or a refused parcel — so it has gone back to the sender. Confirm your address and phone number with them before they send it again.
- Why does tracking not show names or my full address?
- Tracking is public, so it shows only the city and pincode at each end. Consignment numbers run in sequence, and showing names or addresses would let anyone look up other people’s parcels.
- Do I need an account to track a parcel?
- No. Consignment tracking is open to anyone — there is nothing to sign up for, nothing to log in to and nothing to install. An account is only needed to book a parcel of your own.
- Can I track a parcel that was not booked through Daakly?
- Yes. Any India Post article number works, whoever booked it: the scans come from India Post either way. For a parcel booked elsewhere the origin and destination cities are withheld — those come from the booking record, which we do not hold — but the full scan trail is shown.
- Why does it say my consignment number is not valid?
- An India Post article number carries a check digit — the ninth digit is calculated from the eight before it, under the UPU S10 standard. So a number of the right length can still be invalid, and when it is, one digit has been misread or two have been swapped. Read it off the label again rather than retrying it.
- How soon after a parcel is booked does tracking start working?
- The first scan normally appears a few hours after the sender hands the parcel in at a post office — not when they book it online. A number that returns nothing on the day it was booked is usually a parcel that has not been handed in yet.
