Tracking says delivered and there is no parcel
A delivered scan means a postman handed the parcel to someone. Nine times in ten that someone is findable within fifty metres. Here is the order to check in, and what to do on the day it is not.
It is a bad feeling and it is worth knowing how ordinary it usually is. "Delivered" on an India Post trail means a postman recorded handing the parcel over. It does not mean the parcel was handed to you specifically, and it does not mean it was left at your door.
Check in this order, today
- Everyone else at the address. India Post hands a parcel to whoever is present and willing to receive it — a family member, a flatmate, a colleague. This is the answer most of the time and it is the cheapest one to check.
- Reception, security, the gate, the shop downstairs. Apartment buildings, offices and gated colonies routinely take parcels on behalf of residents, and the postman records that as delivered because it is.
- Neighbours. Less common in India than in some countries, but it happens, particularly where a door went unanswered.
- The delivery scan itself. Our tracking page shows the location and time of each scan. A delivery recorded at a location that is not yours, or at a time nobody was there, is a different problem from one recorded at your own pincode at a plausible hour — and it is worth knowing which you have before you raise it.
Raise it the same day
If it is genuinely not there, speed matters more than anything else you do. Delivery records are reconciled locally and the postman who made the delivery remembers today what they will not remember next week.
Tell the sender the same day. They hold the booking record, which is what a case with India Post is opened against, and they can ask for proof of delivery — the record of who signed for it. A name on that record that nobody recognises is the fastest way to find out where a parcel went.
Why the tracking page cannot tell you who took it
Public tracking shows the city and pincode at each end and nothing else — no names, no addresses, no phone numbers. India Post article numbers run in sequence, so a public lookup that returned any of that could be walked from one number to the next to harvest it.
Proof of delivery is not public for the same reason. It goes to the sender, against their booking, which is the other reason the sender is the route.
